Name: Cofría caves

Location: ~1.4km N of Camijanes, near the Mirador de Cofría 📌

GPS: N43°20'25" W4°29'07" (sinks of the Regato Mata del Tocial)

UTM: 30T 379.72 4799.87

GPS: N43°20'22" W4°29'21" (resurgence rift)

UTM: 30T 379.40 4799.81

Map: Nansa

Surveys: None

Description:

Two caves so far discovered; one an abandoned(?) resurgence at river level 📌, the other close to multiple sinks 📌 in the bed of the stream that flows into the depression which is to the east of the road between the Mirador and Camijanes and south of the road from the Mirador to Abanillas.

The ‘resurgence rift’ is almost certainly Cueva del Rejo:

the third document includes links to the six bat species:

Miniopterus schreibersi »  (Schreiber’s bat)

Myotis blythii »  (Lesser mouse-eared bat)

Myotis myotis »  (Greater mouse-eared bat)

Rhinolophus euryale »  (Mediterranean horseshoe bat)

Rhinolophus ferrumequinum »  (Greater horseshoe bat)

Rhinolophus mehelyi »  (Mehely’s horseshoe bat).

Visits:

2009.06.26 – Exploration of dry resurgence

2009.07.01 – Initial exploration of cave close to sinks

2010.07.14 – Exploration of sink cave down climbs to rift

2010.07.14 – Re-exploration of dry resurgence (approach from S.)

2011.05.19 – Another re-exploration of dry resurgence (attempted climb); big bats

2018.05.18 – Another re-exploration of dry resurgence

Other:

The cliff below the Mirador de Cofría seems to be a well-known climbing site.

Expeditions to the Picos de Europa and elsewhere since 1973.
